Featured Artist Window Program Guidelines and Policies
Display Environment
The Featured Artist Window Program is a public, street-facing display located in the windows of the Howell Opera House. Artists acknowledge that:
The display area is visible to the public 24 hours per day.
Artwork may be exposed to natural light and temperature fluctuations.
Installation methods must not damage or alter the historic building.
No drilling, permanent adhesives, or structural modifications are permitted.
Artwork requiring electricity, technical infrastructure, hazardous materials, or structural modification cannot be accommodated. All displayed work must be appropriate for public viewing in a family-accessible Main Street environment. The Livingston Arts Council reserves the right to decline or remove work that is unsafe, offensive, discriminatory, or inconsistent with the organization’s mission and community standards.
Artist Responsibilities
If selected, artists agree to:
Deliver artwork on a mutually agreed-upon date and time.
Coordinate directly with staff for installation.
Provide all necessary transportation.
Provide all reasonable hardware or materials required for safe and secure display.
Remove artwork promptly at the conclusion of the scheduled display period.
The Livingston Arts Council and Howell Opera House are not responsible for transporting, installing, or moving artwork. Artists must be present and prepared to manage their own work during installation and removal. Artists retain ownership of their artwork at all times.
Liability
Participation in this program involves public display in a street-facing environment. Artists assume responsibility for transportation, handling, and preparation of their work for display. The Livingston Arts Council and Howell Opera House are not responsible for theft, vandalism, loss, or damage to artwork, except in cases of gross negligence. Artists may obtain independent insurance coverage at their discretion.
Scheduling and Program Operations
Display dates are determined in coordination with staff. The Livingston Arts Council reserves the right to remove or end a display prior to the scheduled end date if necessary due to events, operational needs, safety concerns, construction, or unforeseen circumstances affecting the historic facility. As a historic building, the Opera House may experience facility conditions or operational considerations that require flexibility. Programming and facility needs take precedence. Displays may be adjusted or removed due to unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to facility issues, safety concerns, weather-related impacts, or emergency conditions.
Removal and Unclaimed Artwork
Artwork must be removed on the agreed date. If artwork is not retrieved within fourteen (14) days of the scheduled removal date and no communication has been received, the Livingston Arts Council reserves the right to store, dispose of, or otherwise manage the artwork at its sole discretion.
Image Authorization
By participating in the Featured Artist Window Program, artists grant the Livingston Arts Council permission to photograph and use images of displayed artwork for promotional, archival, and marketing purposes related to the program.
Organizational Status
The Livingston Arts Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting arts and culture in the community. The Featured Artist Window Program provides display space only. Participation does not create membership status, partnership, sponsorship, agency relationship, or endorsement by the Livingston Arts Council. The Livingston Arts Council does not guarantee promotion, media coverage, sales, or future opportunities beyond temporary display within the designated window space.
Agreement Requirement
Artists selected for display will be required to sign a formal Featured Artist Window Program Agreement prior to installation. The agreement will outline display dates, responsibilities, installation expectations, liability acknowledgment, and program terms specific to the selected display period. Artwork may not be installed until the agreement has been signed by the artist and the Livingston Arts Council.
Authority
The Livingston Arts Council retains final authority over selection, scheduling, installation requirements, display duration, and administration of the program. Participation in the Featured Artist Window Program constitutes agreement to these guidelines.
